Did you see the documentary "Into the Storm"? So good and so insightful.
I've come to realize that humans are programmable, and some humans are very programmable. If you think about it this was necessary from an evolutionary standpoint. We needed one or two strong personalities to lead the group and we needed the other 148 or so to follow along. Now we've got a few folks (marketers to politicians to preachers, etc) who've learned the persuasion and story-telling skills to pull millions along. I'd guess at least 50% of the current population is defenseless against these folks.
