I’m under contract with HarperOne to write a book that draws from my pastoral experience and PhD research on conspiracy theory and American evangelicalism. The working title: “Holy Paranoia.”

A Preview of the Book

I can’t wait to share more in the months ahead. For now, here’s some quick answers to the most obvious questions.

What is this book about?

The book is going to tell a story, one that combines my own experience as a pastor with my research as a theologian. In this, I hope to uncover the untold history of the way(s) conspiracy theory has featured in evangelical America across centuries, from slave revolts, communist infiltration and deep states to immigrant invasions and stolen elections; the book is not only going to uncover this history, but offer ways to resist the theological undertow that causes it.

Who is this book for?

It’s a book for anyone whose lives and communities have been fractured by conspiracism. It’s a book that offers us a way of naming the forces that are tearing our social fabric apart, and in naming, also offering a way of resisting. This is a book about good suspicion, about developing the courage to say “I don’t know” coupled with the resolve and conviction to tell the truth in an age of distortion and outrage.
